How to Keep Connected with Your Aging Loved Ones During Busier Seasons

November often becomes a busy month as we all start preparing our homes for the holiday season. Then, at work, we’re in the midst of the fourth quarter–deadlines approaching, final numbers are being submitted, and we’re prepping for the upcoming year. On top of all of this, we’re also trying to find the perfect gifts for everyone. This is why we need to take November to be proactive and set aside time for the aging loved ones in our lives.

Not every part of our lives needs to be scheduled down to the minute, but during busier months, such as November, it is important to pay closer attention to our schedules so that staying connected with the ones we care about doesn’t fall to the back burner. Having a schedule during the busier months, like November, can often be a helpful way to make sure we stay connected with our aging loved ones, even when life gets hectic.

Here are some other simple ways to make sure our loved ones feel supported throughout those busier months:

1. Mention Something that Reminds You of Them

This could be a movie that you’ve seen together in the past, an activity you know they like to do or that you’ve done together, or even something funny you’ve heard/seen recently. Making small connections like these reminds our loved ones that they’re on our minds.

2. Regular Check-ins

Whether by phone or text, it can be used as a tool to reach out. Life can be so busy; if it’s necessary, create a recurring weekly reminder on your phone, Google Calendar, or whichever way you regulate your schedule to reach out to this loved one.

3. Send a Handwritten Letter

This may seem outdated, but it can be more thoughtful than you may think. With phones and computers, you may wonder what the point in writing a letter is, but it shows that you not only spent time thinking about them, but you also made a personal effort to brighten their day.

4. Actively Listen and Engage in Conversation

When you talk with your aging loved one, whether in person or over the phone, take the time to really listen and ask questions. You may be surprised by the stories, memories, and experiences you discover simply by showing an interest. It’s a good reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful connections start with a simple question.

5. Make it Fun!

Connecting doesn’t have to be just a text, phone call, or hanging out at their home. Take them to the movies, local farmer’s markets, shopping, out to eat, or anything else they might enjoy that gets them out and making memories!

The time that we take out of our lives and the memories we make with our aging loved ones have a lasting impact that we may not realize. Use these tips as a reminder that reaching out can feel so simple to us, yet so significant to them. 💜
